This Cheltenham YMCA van is serving tea and buns outside the Royal Well Canteen. Note the YMCA red triangle on the mugs. This symbol was adopted during the First World War and has been synonymous with the YMCA worldwide ever since. During the Dunkirk evacuation, Cheltenham was a major junction and watering hole for the many trains which distributed troops all over the country. Such was the demand for refreshments at the station that the adjacent YMCA canteen ran out of mugs and had to knock on nearby does for replacements.
There was no age restriction on women volunteers, and young and old worked together in harmony.
