Elizabeth Trye (see message below) was a truly dynamic American who took charge of all the Cheltenham YMCA tea vans, at least four of which were acquired through her own personal connections in the USA. The wife of Captain John Henry Trye, the Mayor of Cheltenham in 1932-3 and 1937-8, she galvanised her troops and is seen (left) with the very first tea car paid for by women in Boston, Massachusetts.

This picture was taken in Cheltenham and can be found in my book "The Red Triangle. A Social and Pictorial History of Cheltenham YMCA, 1855-2005". The lady in the middle with the glasses is Elizabeth Trye, an American who was married to the Mayor of Cheltenham. This particular tea car was financed by her American friends in Boston, Massachusetts.
