Not only did the troops need physical sustenance during the last war, they also needed things to fill their spare time. With no television, 78rpm records being melted down and re-used and precious little on the radio ? or wireless as it was known at the time ? the obvious alternative was books. The nation was keen on reading and the education system, both for children and adults, actively encouraged it. This wartime Cheltenham YMCA mobile library was donated by leader Mrs. Trye?s mother in New York, long before the Americans entered the war.
