Lansdown Station, now the only station left in Cheltenham, was on the LMS wartime main line and saw hundreds of thousands of servicemen travelling through, many of whom had to change trains. When they were discovered sleeping rough in the vicinity a new YMCA canteen was hurriedly erected and once opened it never closed. During the Dunkirk evacuation it handled in excess of 10,000 men passing through on trains destined for all parts of the country. When they steamed off, however, they took so many YMCA cups with them that a rapid house to house search for replacements had to be undertaken!
